Angel Boligàn Corbo was born in Havana. In 1992 he moved to Mexico. He draws for the newspaper EL UNIVERSAL and the satirical magazines CONOZCA MÁS and EL CHAMUCO. He is a member of the cartoonist group “Cartooning for Peace” and won worldwide more than 130 prizes in cartoon competitions.

Angel comes from a country surrounded by dreams, frustrations and sometimes nightmares. Cuba, land of intensive social and political incidents, gave Bolig án the experience of life. A socialist who later will perceive the capitalist world with a broader look, becoming that way an observer with a surprising maturity.

Since the beginning of this century he conquered one country after another in Europe and in Latin America, but also China and the United States. He is therefore a cartoonist of the 21th century.
We can call Boligàn a “cartoonist at-all-areas“. His work consists of excellent editorial cartoons, remarkable caricatures, small strips of high quality, but his great talent is mainly reflected in his humorous drawings.

In dealing with everyday problems, love and disappointment, ecology, religion, speculation, new technologies and corruption, with a subtle humor and great capacity for synthesis, Boligàn gives to his original artworks the exceptional effulgence.

PAUL BOND’S MAGICAL SURREAL ART PIECES

slider-artist-paul-bond

Paul Bond’s art lives in the spaces between dreaming and reality. Drawing from the Latin American genre of Magic Realism where symbolic, surreal and fantastic elements blend with realistic atmospheres, they unveil a world where anything is possible. Bond shares the following about his work:

“When viewing a scene, object or line in a novel that moves me, my mind’s eye is continually imagining what elements I could introduce or alter to make a grander statement about what I am experiencing. The physical world to me is heartbreakingly beautiful and profound. And the best way I can know how to channel those deep emotions life inspires in me is by adding to it through a world of my own creation. A world intended to both deepen my own life experience and to stir the souls of my fellow travelers.”

RUBEN IRELAND’S ILLUSTRATIONS

3a9e1378c9c9ad4218d0de2cdc65f5e9

Ruben Ireland is an illustrator of strength. There is strength in the jaw-lines of his portraits, in the graphic execution of the finished product and the colours which jump out from the work. In-between the red-raw hands stroking outwards of ‘Paint or Die Trying’ and the half-man/half-ram creations of ‘Amalgamations’ sits a world of dark fairy-tales.

These are portraits which stare out stoically awaiting the judgement of the viewer. Girls tend to birds with eyes covered or stare face-to-face with horned, blacked out animals. There is no room for cowardice or worry; there is an acceptance and silent acknowledgement of unspoken understanding between beast, human and viewer. Enter the world of darkened reality and séance-like peace…

JONATHAN WOLSTENHOLME AND HIS BOOK WORLD

126151

Jonathan Wolstenholme was born in London in 1950. Jonathan Wolstenholme is a British artist and illustrator best known for his amazingly detailed works deriving from a love of old books. Wolstenholme paints exquisitely detailed still lifes of books in watercolour .He is fascinated by the world of antiquarian books and paraphernalia from a bygone age when craftsmanship was highly prized. He works in watercolour in such exquisite detail that it is possible to read every word in the books that he paints.
Books on Books is a series of illustrations in which the book world is being described by… the books. Jonathan Wolstenholme combines his appreciation of surrealism, his fondness for antiquarian books, and his wry humor in creating his clever and engaging anthropomorphic images. In doing so, he has created a popular niche for his art, and brought attention to a disappearing art-form; the ancient hallmark of creating books.

EDWARD GOREY ILLUSTRATIONS & BIOGRAPY

Born on February 22, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, Edward St. John Gorey was a designer, writer and illustrator known for his unique artistic style, which blended elements of the macabre with humor and whimsy. He taught himself how to read at an early age and two books of his favorites from this time, Draculaand Alice in Wonderland, left a lasting impression on him.

At Chicago’s Francis W. Parker School, Gorey discovered his passion for art. He even took some courses at the Chicago Institute of Art in 1942 after graduating in 1942. That same year, however, Gorey soon found his life headed in a new direction. He was drafted into the U.S. Army. The young soldier didn’t see any action during World War II, spending much of his time as a clerk at Utah’s Dugway Proving Ground.

Not long after finishing his military service, Gorey enrolled Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There he befriended writer Frank O’Hara. Gorey also became part of The Poets’ Theatre in Cambridge where he served as a designer. In 1950, he completed his studies at Harvard, earning his bachelor’s degree in French literature.

As an illustrator, Gorey developed a quirky, unique and macabre style that was a large influence on the work of artists like Tim Burton. After publishing his first work, 1953’sUnstrung Harp, he gained a local following, and his popularity continued to grow. Other independent works include The Doubtful Guest (1957), The Hapless Child (1961), The Gashlycrumb Tinies (1963) and The Gilded Bat(1966). Gorey also illustrated numerous works by other writers, including literary greats H.G. Wells, T.S. Eliot, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and Virginia Woolf. In 1978, he won a Tony Award for costume design on the Broadway production of Dracula. His work began even more widely known in 1980 with the premiere of the PBS series Mystery!, the intro of which boasted his illustrations. Gorey died on April 15, 2000, in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

23 YEAR OLD FREELANCE ILLUSTRATOR AND DESIGNER ;ANNYA KARINA MARTTINEN

She is from Canada but currently reside in Southern Ontario. Annya received her diploma in graphic design in 2013 but recently she spend most of her time painting & being the bunny mother of Oats, Peaches and Olive. Her work is mainly inspired by quiet everyday moments and vintage fashion. She mainly work in both traditional and digital mediums.
“My life is and has always ceased to be solitary, so a life of dreaming has greatly shaped my work. In this I become inspired by animals, plants, and the beautiful people I see in films. I have always been inspired by classic books and their delicate and intricate descriptions. My surroundings effect me greatly so I try hard to make sure my bedroom from which I work is always clean and filled with inspiration. I simply cannot work or be happy in a messy or dark space! I collect a lot of prints/postcards of my favorite illustrators, mainly Emily Martin. I seem to own so many of her prints! There’s also a lot of old fairytale illustrations from the 18th and 19th centuries on my walls. These eras and subject matter inspire me greatly. I also have a closet full of beautiful vintage items such as night-gowns, silky blouses, midi-skirts, cardigans and so on. They really have inspired me to paint clothing from different eras. My paintings of dreamy girls are, more often than not, in another time period fashion-wise”.
